What does being an ally to LGBTQ2+ communities mean to you?

An ally is someone who believes members of the LGBTQ2+ community should have the same rights as heteronormative people. Allies are attentive, open-minded people who stay informed of the issues and defend the LGBTQ2+ community.

In your opinion, what are the qualities that make a good ally?

A good ally is a curious, empathetic, open-minded person who sets an example by speaking up whenever discriminatory actions or comments are made.

Why do you think it’s important for Medicago to educate people and raise awareness of the LGBTQ2+ community?

Because everyone has a role to play in normalizing this reality. Plus, as an employer, Medicago has a duty to make sure all its employees feel accepted and included at work, regardless of how they identify. Everyone deserves a workplace where they feel safe and can be the most authentic version of themselves.

What has your experience been at Medicago as a member of a gender diverse community?

It’s been very positive. I’ve always felt very comfortable openly discussing my sexual orientation and it has never had a negative impact on my relationships with my colleagues.

Microaggressions are messages—often unconscious—that convey a stereotype, a negative trait, or an insensitivity to differences in others. Why do you think it is important for a company to put a stop to this behaviour?

It is Medicago’s duty to create a workplace where everyone feels safe and can be the most authentic version of themselves. Medicago must therefore do everything it can to shield employees from microaggressions, regardless of their gender, gender identity, religious beliefs, etc.
