Using Plants

Plants are the world’s most cost-effective and prolific protein producers. Thousands of different proteins are produced using plants as miniature “protein factories” for commercial applications, from enzymes used in industrial processes to therapeutic antibodies that advance human health.

  • Conventional production of proteins using cell cultures, yeast, bacteria or eggs is relatively complicated and time-consuming
  • Plants are highly efficient at expressing proteins of varying complexity and glycosylation patterns. This translates into very high yields and low cost of manufacture.
  • Greenhouse-based manufacturing facilities can be built quickly and economically for rapid scale-up in order to meet urgent needs or to take advantage of emerging market demands.

Medicago’s proprietary plant-based technologies allow rapid start-up and high production yields at advantageous cost.
