Seasonal flu vaccines
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe illness, and in some cases, complications leading to death.
- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 5% to 20% of the U.S. population gets the flu each year; on average, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications, and about 36,000 people die.
- Public health authorities advocate seasonal flu vaccination each year as a preventive measure, particularly for two groups: those at higher risk of exposure to the flu, such as healthcare professionals and teachers, and those who are at higher risk of developing serious illness from the seasonal flu, including the elderly, very young children, and people with certain health conditions.
